How to apply for a skill assessment for a Human Resource Manager?
The Institute of Managers and Leaders (IML AU) is the authorized body to conduct skill assessments for HR Managers in Australia.. To be eligible for a skill assessment as a Human Resource Manager, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
Years of Experience:
- Hold a relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree comparable to an equivalent AQF qualification, and have at least three years of employment experience in an HR-related role, including at least two years as an HR Manager; OR
- Have at least five years of employment experience in an HR-related role, including at least two years as an HR Manager if the applicant does not hold a relevant degree.
Currency of Industry Skills:
- Provide evidence of at least one year full-time or part-time equivalent paid employment within the past five years to demonstrate currency of skills and industry knowledge.
- The applicant must have held a strategic-level HR Manager role with decision-making authority in key HR-related matters.
- The applicant’s responsibilities must have included directing employees’ activities and monitoring their performance and development on an ongoing basis.
Position and Reporting Lines:
- The HR Manager position held by the applicant must be the most senior HR position.
- The applicant must have reported to a General Manager, HR Director, or CEO.
- The applicant must have supervised either qualified or administrative staff, depending on the size of the organization.
Type of Organization:
- The size and complexity of the organization will influence the assessment, and it is unlikely that employment within an organization with less than 50 employees would support employment experience at the required level.
Management and Leadership:
- The applicant must demonstrate management and leadership experience by referring to the IML Management Competency Framework and selecting one competence from each of the three areas: Manage self, Manage and lead others, and Manage and lead the business.
- For each of the three competencies selected, the applicant must describe how they achieved it in 300 words or less, providing specific examples from their work experience, stating what they personally did and why, what the outcome was, and what they learned from it.
What are the PR pathways for a Human Resource Manager?
After studying a Human Resource course in Australia, you can be eligible for many Permanent Residency (PR) options in Australia.
Step 1: Apply for a 485 Visa
After completing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in HR, you are eligible to apply for a 485 (Post Graduate Work Stream) visa. To be eligible, you must have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, with no band score lower than 5.
With the 485 visas, you will have more time to prepare for a PR or a temporary visa that leads to a PR.
Step 2: Apply for a PR or a Visa that Leads to a PR
190 – Skilled Nominated Visa – This is a permanent residency visa but requires a nomination from an Australian state. You must also work in the nominated state for at least 2 years. Each state may have its own occupation list and additional requirements, so be sure to check if you meet all eligibility criteria before requesting a nomination.
491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa – This is not a permanent visa, but it can lead to a PR (visa 191). To be eligible, you must commit to working in a regional area of Australia for a specified period of time and score at least 65 points under the Skilled Migration Points Test.
482 – Temporary Skilled Shortage, Medium Term Stream – This visa allows you to stay and work in Australia for up to 4 years. To be eligible, you must have an employer willing to sponsor you. Holding a 482 visa increases your chances of obtaining a PR in the future.
494 – Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa – This visa is applicable if you have a regional employer willing to sponsor you. You must have at least 3 years of work experience in the nominated occupation and obtain a relevant skills assessment.
Note: For the 190, and 491 visa subclasses, you must score a minimum of 65 points under the Skilled Migration Points Test. For the 482 and 494 visa subclasses, these are not points-tested visas but instead require a sponsor and usually 2-3 years of work experience in the nominated occupation.
