How to pass a skill assessment for accounting degree holders?

To be eligible for any Australian skilled migration visa, students need to achieve a relevant skill assessment first. There are several key points for candidates to pursue accounting skill assessment: 

  • Qualification: Australian bachelor’s degree or 12 units Australian master’s degree or an overseas tertiary and/or professional membership qualification comparable to at least the level of an Australian bachelor’s degree (AQF level 7 or higher) 
  • Educational knowledge: Your course majors must be one of the followings: Accounting systems and Processes, Business Law, Economics, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Finance and Financial Management, Management Accounting, Quantitative Methods.  
  • English proficiency: You must obtain at least overall 7.0 IELTS with no band score under 7.0, or you have completed a professional year in accounting.  

 

The Accounting Professional Year Program is approved by the Department of Home Affairs. It is available to overseas students who have an Australian accounting degree qualification as a result of at least two years’ study in Australia.

What is the PR pathway for international students after studying accounting/finance in Australia?

Step 1: Apply for a 485 visa 

After completing at least 2 years accounting/finance course, you are eligible to apply for visa 485 (Post Graduate Work Stream). You are required to have at least IELTS overall 6.5 with no band score under 5.5 in the past 1 year before you lodge your visa application.

Under visa 485, you can stay in Australia for 2-4 years depending on your degree. Thus, you will have more time to prepare yourself for permanent residence (PR) or a temporary visa that can lead to a PR. 

 

Step 2: Apply for a PR or a visa that can lead to a PR 

After successfully completing an accredited accounting/finance course in Australia, you’ll find pathways to facilitate your migration to the country. Depending on your occupation, you might be eligible for one or more of the following visa options:

What should I do if I don’t meet the entry requirement for a Bachelor of Accounting/Finance?

If you do not meet the entry requirement to directly enroll in a bachelor’s degree of accounting/finance, you can choose the Diploma pathway option. It means that you can study the Diploma in Accounting/Finance for one year (the entry requirement for this course is only 5.5 IELTS) and then transition to 2 years Bachelor of Accounting/Finance. The total study duration is still 3 years which is the same as the Bachelor of Accounting/Finance– direct entry program.    

Is it possible to switch from studying accounting to finance, or vice versa, during my course of study?

Many Australia universities offer flexibility to change majors within the business school, for example switching from studying accounting to finance and vice versa. However, please check with your school well in advance if you can switch and bear in mind that the transferring process may affect your length of study.
