Introduction
Great news for skilled workers looking to make New Zealand their home! The government has just announced significant updates to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa. These changes are designed to make it easier for employers to retain talented staff and to support the country’s long-term economic growth.
Two New Pathways to Residence
The biggest update is the introduction of two brand-new residence pathways, recognizing the immense value of practical skills and on-the-job experience.
- Skilled Work Experience Pathway: This is for migrants in skilled roles (classified as ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3). To be eligible, you’ll need at least five years of relevant work experience, with two of those years being in New Zealand while earning at least 1.1 times the median wage.
- Trades and Technician Pathway: Tailored for those in specific trades or technician roles, this pathway requires a relevant Level 4 or higher qualification. You’ll need at least four years of post-qualification experience, including 18 months in New Zealand earning at or above the median wage.
Of course, all applicants will still need to meet the standard health, character, and English language requirements.
More Good News for Grads and Workers!
The government is also making other positive adjustments:
- Boost for NZ Graduates: If you have a New Zealand university-level qualification, you’ll get increased points, smoothing your path from study to residence. This is a fantastic incentive for international students to study locally!
- Reduced Work Experience: The amount of New Zealand work experience required for most migrants is being reduced from a maximum of three years down to two years.
- Simplified Wage Requirements: The rule requiring an increased wage rate when you apply for residence is being removed. Now, you’ll just need to maintain the same median wage rate throughout your required period of NZ work experience.
Key Dates and Details
Mark your calendars! These exciting changes are set to come into effect in August 2026. Immigration New Zealand will provide more detailed information as the date gets closer.

Important Exclusions to Note
To manage immigration and target genuine skill needs, some occupations will be on “red” or “amber” lists.
- Red List: Occupations on this list will be excluded from the two new pathways.
- Amber List: These occupations will have extra criteria to meet for the skilled work experience pathway and won’t be eligible for the trades and technician pathway.
These changes represent a significant and positive shift in New Zealand’s immigration policy, making it a more attractive destination than ever for skilled professionals and tradespeople from around the world.
