Introduction
New Zealand is taking decisive action to tackle talent shortages and boost economic recovery by fast-tracking residence for skilled tradespeople.
“Skilled workers are essential to keeping New Zealand’s manufacturing sector resilient and productive,” says Immigration Minister Erica Stanford. “When we don’t have enough people in these roles, productivity slows, business growth stalls, and the economy suffers. These changes will help us bring in the talent we need to keep moving.”
What’s Changing?
From 18 August 2025, ten new trades occupations will be added to the Green List’s Work to Residence pathway. This pathway allows migrants to apply for residence after working in a relevant role for an accredited employer in New Zealand for two years.

New Trades Added to the Green List Work to Residence Pathway
- Metal Fabricator
- Metal Machinist (First Class)
- Fitter (General)
- Fitter and Turner
- Fitter-Welder
- Pressure Welder
- Welder
- Panel Beater
- Vehicle Painter
- Paving Plant Operator
Why This Matters
Manufacturing contributes around NZD 21.8 billion annually to New Zealand’s economy. While business confidence is improving as inflation and living costs ease, many manufacturers still struggle to find skilled workers for critical roles.
“Bringing in overseas talent will help lift productivity, support business growth, and create opportunities for more local apprenticeships,” says Small Business and Manufacturing Minister Chris Penk.
As these businesses grow, they will be better positioned to expand operations and contribute to stronger local communities across New Zealand.
