Update Overview

New Zealand continues to attract skilled workers from across the globe, offering multiple pathways to residence through employment. However, recent changes to wage thresholds mean applicants must carefully review their eligibility before applying.

As of 18 August 2025, the median wage has increased to NZD $33.56/hour, directly impacting most skilled residence visa categories. Whether you are planning to apply under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), Straight to Residence, or Work to Residence pathway, understanding these updates is essential for a successful application.

Key Employment-Based Residence Pathways

Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

Applicants must score at least 6 points to qualify. Points are awarded for skilled employment, qualifications, and work experience.

Straight to Residence

Only applicants employed in a Green List Tier 1 role with the required credentials can apply directly for residence without waiting.

Work to Residence

Applicants working in specific qualifying roles can apply for residence after meeting the required period of skilled work in New Zealand.

New Wage Thresholds Explained

To qualify for a skilled residence visa, you must have a job (or job offer) with an INZ-accredited employer that meets the updated wage thresholds. The required rate depends on the skill level of your role, as defined under the ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations, version 1.3).

  • Skill Levels 1, 2, and 3 → Must earn at least the median wage

  • Skill Levels 4, 5, or unclassified roles → Must earn 1.5 × median wage

Updated Pay Thresholds (Effective 18 August 2025)

Threshold Hourly Rate Annual Salary (40 hrs/week)
Median Wage NZD $33.56 NZD $69,804.80
1.5 × Median Wage NZD $50.34 NZD $104,707.20
2 × Median Wage NZD $67.12 NZD $139,609.60
3 × Median Wage NZD $100.68 NZD $209,414.40

⚠️ Some trade roles on the Green List have specific pay rates that may differ from these thresholds.

Work Experience Rules

If you are already working in New Zealand on a temporary work visa and planning to apply for residence, here’s what you need to know:

  • Your work experience is only counted if you were paid at or above the wage threshold in place when you started your role.

  • If wage thresholds rise while you remain in the same job, you do not need an immediate pay increase.

  • If you change employers, your new salary must meet the updated threshold.

  • At the time of applying for residence, you must be earning at least the current wage threshold.

Why This Matters for Migrants

The increase in wage thresholds means many applicants will now need higher salaries to qualify for residence. This makes it crucial to plan your career pathway early, choose roles that align with New Zealand’s skilled migration needs, and ensure your employment meets INZ’s requirements.
